Dress Hats For Men: Traditional Styles, Modern Sizing
Our dress hat collection includes 85+ styles across fedoras, homburgs, and bowlers. Sizes run 6¾ through 8 in traditional hat measurements. Most styles ship same-day from our Louisville warehouse.
We stock Stetson (American-made since 1865), Dobbs (family-owned since 1908), and Bruno Capelo (Italian-influenced designs). Prices range from $89 for wool felt trilbys to $285 for premium beaver felt fedoras.
Materials & Construction
Felt hats use rabbit fur or wool felt in 3mm to 5mm thickness. Rabbit fur felt weighs less and holds shape better than wool. Both last 15-20 years with proper storage. Our straw options include genuine Panama (hand-woven in Ecuador) and Milan braid (machine-woven in Italy).
Leather sweatbands adjust up to half a size for comfort. Most crown heights measure 4.5 to 5 inches. Brim widths run 2 inches (trilby) to 2.75 inches (wide-brim fedora). Grosgrain ribbon bands come in black, brown, or navy.
Sizing & Fit
Measure your head circumference one inch above your ears using a soft tape measure. Our sizing chart converts inches to standard hat sizes. Between sizes? Order the larger one. The sweatband will conform to your head after a few wears.
Can't decide? Order both sizes and return one free within 30 days. Keep the original box and stuffing for returns.
Which style for weddings?
Homburgs suit black-tie weddings. The upturned brim and center dent crown match formal tuxedos. For daytime weddings, choose a fedora in gray or tan to complement lighter suits. Match your hat color to your suit or shoes, not your tie.
What's the difference between a fedora and homburg?
Fedoras have a pinched front crown and a soft snap-brim you can angle down. Homburgs have a center dent crown (like a bowler top) and a stiff upturned brim. Homburgs are more formal. Think Frank Sinatra (fedora) versus Al Pacino in The Godfather (homburg).
Fur felt vs wool felt: which is better?
Fur felt (rabbit or beaver) costs more but lasts longer. It resists water better and weighs 30% less than wool. Wool felt works fine for occasional wear and costs $50-80 less per hat. For weekly church or business wear, invest in fur felt. For seasonal wear, wool felt does the job.
Can I wear dress hats with business casual?
Short-brim styles work with blazers and chinos. Try a pork pie (2-inch brim) or trilby (2-inch brim) instead of wide-brim fedoras (2.5+ inches). Save homburgs and bowlers for full suits with ties. Navy blazer plus tan trilby is a safe business-casual combination.
How do I store dress hats?
Store hats upside-down on their crown, never resting on the brim. This prevents brim warping. Use a hat box or shelf with 8 inches of clearance. Keep hats away from humidity (basements) and heat (attics). Brush felt hats monthly with a soft-bristle hat brush going counter-clockwise.
