Men's crocodile shoes at DapperFam

DapperFam carries genuine crocodile and caiman crocodile shoes from Mauri and Belvedere, plus croc-embossed Italian calfskin styles from Paul Parkman and the DapperFam house line. Every product title tells you which one you are looking at. "Crocodile", "Caiman Crocodile", and "Hornback" mean genuine skin. "Croco Embossed" means calfskin pressed with a crocodile pattern.

How do you tell genuine crocodile from croc-embossed leather?

Look at the scales. Genuine crocodile has a small dot, a sensory pore, near the center of each belly scale, and no two scales are exactly alike. Embossed calfskin has a pattern pressed into smooth leather, so the scales repeat, the grooves are shallow and even, and there are no pores. Our guide to what to look for when buying exotic shoes walks through more checks.

Crocodile vs alligator: what's the difference?

Crocodile has a visible pore on each belly scale and a squarer, more uniform tile pattern. Alligator has no pores and larger, more irregular tiles. Caiman, often sold as caiman crocodile, is a smaller relative with bonier scales, which gives it a firmer, more textured look.

Feature Crocodile Alligator Caiman crocodile
Sensory pores One small dot on each belly scale None Present, often faint
Belly pattern Squarer, more uniform tiles Larger, more irregular tiles Smaller tiles with bony ridges
Feel Smooth and supple Smooth and supple Firmer, more textured
Hornback cut Raised ridges from the back Raised ridges from the back Common, bold ridges

How do you care for crocodile shoes?

Wipe them with a damp, not wet, microfiber cloth and dry them right away. Every few months, apply a thin coat of a reptile conditioner such as Saphir Reptan. Never use regular shoe polish, saddle soap, or mink oil on the scales. Keep cedar shoe trees in them between wears, store them in a breathable dust bag, and keep them out of direct sun. Our exotic leather care guide covers the full routine.

Is crocodile leather legal to buy?

Yes, in most of the US. International trade in crocodile and caiman skins is regulated under CITES, the treaty that tracks legal, farmed sources. A few states restrict the sale of certain exotic skins, so call us before you order if you are unsure about yours.

Are all shoes in this collection genuine crocodile?

No. This collection includes genuine crocodile and caiman styles and croc-embossed calfskin styles. The product title always says which. For genuine skins only, shop our genuine exotic skin shoes collection.

Do crocodile shoes stretch?

Very little. Genuine crocodile does not stretch like calfskin, so order your usual dress shoe size, not your sneaker size. Between sizes? Call us and we will help you choose, and size exchanges are easy if the fit isn't right.

Can I wear crocodile shoes in the rain?

Light rain is fine. Avoid puddles, downpours, and snow. If they get wet, stuff them with paper and let them air dry for a day, away from heaters, then condition them once they are fully dry.

What is the difference between belly and hornback crocodile?

Belly cuts come from the underside and have flat, tile-like scales, the classic look for dress shoes. Hornback cuts come from the back and have raised, bony ridges, a bolder look you will see on sneakers and casual styles.

Which crocodile shoe colors work for business formal?

Black crocodile oxfords are the most formal choice and work with navy or charcoal suits. Cognac pairs well with tan, gray, or navy suits for daytime. Save bright colors and two-tone styles for weddings and social events.
