Determining Your Hat Size: A Step-by-Step Guide
To find the perfect fit for your hat, follow these easy steps:
1. Gather your tools: Grab a measuring tape or a piece of string that you can measure later.
2. Position the tape: Place the measuring tape around your head, ensuring it sits at the middle of your forehead and about 1/8″ above your ear. Make sure it's snug but not overly tight.
3. Take the measurement: Hold the tape firmly in place and note the measurement. Refer to the chart below to find your hat size.
4. In between sizes? If your measurement falls between two sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size for a more comfortable fit. We also offer hat-size reducers to help snug up your new hat if necessary.

Hat size is based on the circumference of the head. In order to determine your proper hat size, you must take a measurement of your head.
Using a tape measure, measure your head about one-half inch above your eyebrows where your hat will rest. Be certain that the tape measure is straight, not twisted. Alternatively, you can use piece of string to measure your head, and then measure the length of the string with a ruler. If you are not certain about size, or are between sizes, buy the larger size.
How do I measure my head for a hat?
To find your perfect hat size, use a flexible measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler). Place the tape approximately 1/8 inch above your ears and across the center of your forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly but not too tightly. If your measurement falls between sizes, we always recommend sizing up and using a hat reducer for the best fit.
What hat size is 7 1/4?
A hat size of 7 1/4 corresponds to a head circumference of approximately 22 5/8 inches or 58 centimeters. In general sizing (Alpha sizing), a 7 1/4 typically falls into the Large (L) category, though this can vary slightly by brand.
What is the difference between S/M/L and numbered sizes?
Numbered sizes (e.g., 7 3/8, 7 1/2) refer to specific fitted measurements based on head diameter. These offer the most precise, tailored fit and are common in high-end fedoras and fitted caps. Alpha sizes (S, M, L, XL) cover a broader range of measurements (e.g., a "Large" often covers both 7 1/4 and 7 3/8). Alpha sizing is more common in casual, crushable, or adjustable headwear.
